We all know how much heat the NRA took for their comment following
the Sandy Hook school shooting when they made the statement that the only way
to stop bad people with guns is good people with guns. Of course, the opposition says fewer guns are
the answer. As with all stories, there
are two sides.
As I stated in my previous post, it is not my intention to
be insensitive to the families of those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook
shootings – or any other shootings. I stated
my opinion in that post and it has not changed.
Below is a link to a news story regarding a shooting which
occurred at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama on the morning of
Saturday, December 15th. This happened
on the fifth floor of the hospital, the Cardiovascular Care Unit. A gunman opened fire and was shot and killed
by police officers – with guns. However,
this was not before an officer and two other people were hurt. My question:
what would have happened if the only person with a gun had been the
shooter?
On Sunday, December 16th, a shooter went into a
restaurant in San Antonio, Texas firing his weapon and then proceeded up the
street, shooting as he went, to a movie theater. The man even shot out the window of a police
car before reaching the movie theater.
He then entered the movie theater firing his weapon. He was shot and disarmed by an off duty
police officer – with a gun. Again,
imagine the outcome if nobody had a gun!!!
This could have been another massacre!
You can view this story by following the links below.
What do the two stories have in common?
1) They involve
persons carrying and firing weapons with the intent to injure or kill other people;
2) You probably have
not heard about them because there has seemingly not been a lot of news
coverage;
3) Both of these
follow closely behind the Sandy Hook shootings, which may have absolutely
nothing to do with anything.
4) They were both
stopped before killing a bunch of people by a person with a gun!
Now, do we really need to take guns out of the hands of
good, decent citizens? Or perhaps we
should just throw some money at cracking down on the guns laws that are already
on the books and try to minimize the number of persons who can obtain guns
illegally.
What’s your take?
