OK - I have my share of disagreements with various laws, political figures, political policies, etc. - probably just as many as the next guy. But, unless I totally slept through Civics in high school, the way to go about changing laws sure has changed.
There was an "Undie Run" held in Salt Lake City, Utah this past Saturday to protest the so-called "up-tight" laws of Utah. Yes, you heard me right - an Undie Run. Apparently the participants stripped down to underwear, both male and female, and ran through the streets in this organized event.
According to the organizers of this event, it was designed to highlight the importance of voting! They even set up a Voter Registration booth. Now the rules stated that everyone was to arrive fully clothed at the designated starting point. You then strip down and store your clothes - or strip down and donate your clothes. Yes - so this is also a clothing drive! Now, you were also encouraged to bring canned goods for donation. Now, we have a food drive as well.
No surprise, along the designated route was a local television station. Of course, a stop was planned for that spot. Afterwards, you could buy beer and food and have a big party. Several after-parties were also planned.
My question is this: How many of the stripped down participants do you really think were there for political purposes, voter registration or donation?? Have we forgotten how democracy works? If you don't like the laws, vote in new lawmakers!
